Mama takes on foster babies...

This sweet pretty mama cow came to us with the new property.  In her past life, she was part of a small raw milk herd share.  Someday we hope to milk her but for now, she's acting as our resident nurse cow.  Mama came to us with a 6-month-old calf and a second 6-month-old calf she took on as a foster when it's mama past away during the nasty sub-zero temps we had last winter.  Mama graciously let those big babies nurse till the day we separated them from her.  We had been looking for a couple bottle calves when I came across these 2 pretty little Jersey babies that had already been bottle fed for several weeks and were healthy and strong.  I brought these little 2 home last week and after several introductions, Mama decided they were pretty sweet little fellas and has begun to care from them as her own.  She has been grooming them and letting them nurse on demand as well as share her hay and cuddle on cold nights.  She's proving to be the perfect starter Mama for our little grass-fed herd.   As far as the babies go they will join our grass-fed beef herd and should hopefully finish out in 2 years.
