We raise a variety of laying hens, heritage and hybrid. We love all the different color eggs they provide. Our layers are feed Non-GMO, antibiotic-free feed on day 1. We do not ever give any growth hormones or appetite stimulants. They are given ample space, fresh air and clean water to maintain a healthy environment.
Our layers start their journey here as day old chicks. We provide them with access to pasture as soon as we can safely do so. Baby chicks are fragile little beings and require consistent warmth and dry bedding. When the weather is warm we try to have our chicks on the pasture as early as 2 weeks, but our typical average is 3 weeks with supplement heat as needed. By 4-6 weeks old most are fully feathered and much more hardy. Our layers live out their lives enjoying sunshine, grass, bugs and normal chicken lives. We do provide supplemental lighting to encourage winter laying and to bring new layers into lay much earlier than they would naturally.
After they are finished laying usually after 2 years, we process them to provide them with the most humane and low-stress processing experience we can provide. The finished product results in a 2.5 lbs average stewing bird that is lean and makes flavorful stocks and soups.
